Gala
|
Referred to by her fans as a “cult artist” for her minimalist look and haunting voice, Gala suddenly disappeared at the top of her success leaving behind an air of mystery. Having found herself locked into a deal with a record company that left her no control over her music, Gala longed to break free from her constraints and return to the excitement, adventure, and freedom that had fueled her initial rocket ride to success. Inspired by artists making independent moves, like Ani Difranco, Prince, Pearl Jam and Fugazi, Gala stopped supporting her first hits and left her European record company and made a bold move back to NY. Here she settled in the Nuevo Hipster Mecca of Williamsburg, Brooklyn one stop away from the legendary lower east side of Manhattan and connected with the rebellious core that had inspired her.
She immediately formed her own label (Matriarchy inc.) and set out to redefine her sound her life and her career. Gala met producer Marcus Bell and electro-punk drummer Deantoni Parks (Kudu), who formed the backbone of her new project “TOUGH LOVE”. Fueled by a desire to break from the programmed, sound she had been associated with in the past Gala pursued a basement “punk-funk-pop” aesthetic somewhere along the lines of Blondie, Prince, The Cure, and The Beatles. Recording in small underground studios throughout New York. Gala collaborated with musicians, producers and engineers from different backgrounds who had worked on everything from Meshell N’genocello, to Balkan Beatbox, to Timbaland and Lil’ Wayne to construct her “TOUGH” new sound.
As a result “TOUGH LOVE” is Gala’s strongest and most eclectic work to date. Catchy lyrics and honed vocal styling allow her to maintain her pop sensibility, while the music captures the underground excitement that made her an overnight multi-million selling success. “Tough Love” is 70’s Punk’s 80’s rock, and 90’s dance all rolled into one. It’s underground dance-floor punk music ready for the new millennium. World, watch out… Gala is back… dare to dream. “ They call me crazy and they say I'm unpredictable, I won't play it safe, I'm not that irresponsible I trust that voice that says: everything's possible, people who don't dream are F*****g dangerous” – Gala from “tough love"
